Essentials of Perioperative Care

The curriculum is designed to create versatile technicians ready for any surgical setting.

Surgical Assisting

Mastering "scrub" duties (instrument handling) and "circulating" duties (managing the sterile field and documentation).

Advanced Instrumentation

Operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of anesthesia machines, monitors, laparoscopes, and surgical lasers.

Infection Control

Strict adherence to aseptic techniques, disinfection, and management of the sterile environment to prevent SSIs (Surgical Site Infections).

Key Skill Development Areas

Training focuses on technical competence and rapid response essential in emergency surgical environments.

Clinical and Technical Proficiency

  • Preparation of specialized trays for various surgeries (e.g., Ortho, Cardio).
  • Patient positioning and transport protocols.
  • Basic life support (BLS) and emergency response within the OT.
  • Understanding of pharmacology relevant to surgical procedures.

Sterilization and CSSD Management

  • Principles of Asepsis and Disinfection.
  • Operation of Sterilizers (Autoclave) and validation methods.
  • Management of the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) workflow.
  • Handling and disposal of biomedical waste according to regulations.

Simulation and Internship

Prerequisite Qualifications

  • High School (10+2) qualification or equivalent.
  • Science Stream (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) is preferred.
  • Aptitude assessment focusing on communication and manual dexterity.

NSQF Skill Progression

The BVoc allows for vertical mobility, certifying skills year-on-year.

  1. Year 1: Diploma in OT Assistant (NSQF Level 5).
  2. Year 2: Advanced Diploma in Surgical Technology (NSQF Level 6).
